OUR GENEROUS SENIOR QUERIES
During
the course of last year we learned that efforts were being made to
resurrect Winterbourne Gunner CC. For those who are not aware, the
three Winterbourne villages - Earls, Dauntsey and Gunner -
collectively known as The Winterbournes lie just a few miles
north east of Salisbury. The inaugural Queries match was played
against WGCC on the August Bank Holiday in 1933, and there are lots of
'senior Queries', and some not so senior, who have played Queries
cricket on the ground over the years and have fond memories of the
ground.
So
the news that the Club was being resurrected resonated amongst the
ranks of Query members. Obviously the new club would need some
funds to get things going and the senior Queries were asked if they
would like to make a modest contribution. In fact they
collectively donated a total of £505, which has now been sent off
to the WGCC project manager Jamie Harvey, who is himself a Wiltshire
Query. In addition, one of our senior members has donated two
lawn mowers to WGCC, one of them a sit-on 3 gang machine! We have also
offered the fledgling Club a fixture and they have accepted - so put
26th August in your diary!
Our thanks to all our senior members who contributed so generously.
I have received the following message from Jamie Harvey: Could you pass on our thanks to everyone who made a donation and assure them the
money will be wisely spent! It will make a great difference and will help
immensely towards the rebirth of WCC.
QUERIES SPONSOR THE BALLS
In
response to an appeal initiated by Wiltshire Cricket Club, the Queries
will be sponsoring the match balls for the home matches of the
Wiltshire Academy side. A cheque for £125 has been sent to County
Development Manager Pete Sykes who says that he is delighted with
our generosity and will say as much in all of the Academy match
programmes.
FIXTURES 2012
The fixtures list is now virtually complete. Most matches are confirmed with a couple provisionally confirmed.
Please go to the
Fixtures page to see the detail.
HIGH FLIER !

It is a little grainy but look carefully and you can clearly see Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomery and the Ryder Cup
in the foreground. Piloted by Query Richard Millard Smith (forward left), they recently flew to Afghanistan
to meet the troops.

Minutes of a Committee Meeting held at 15
Sunnyside, West Lavington,
on 19th October 2011 at 7.00pm.
Present: David Haywood (President), Simon Campbell (Hon Treasurer), Richard Brewer, Brian Thompson and Barry Aitken (Hon
Secretary).
Apologies: Hamish Horton, James Melhorn, Jeremy Wilkins and Freddie Coupe (both of whom emailed in some points).
Fixtures: After considerable discussion it was decided not to repeat the Swindon GWR Old Boys XI and All
Cannings CC matches in 2012.
It was decided
to ask the Royal Artillery if they
would consider a half day or a full day’s match, rather than a T20, and to consult the Old Wellingtonians
about dates as the comparative date in 2012 would not be during the College
half term.
It was decided the invite the
following Clubs for a fixture should there be available dates:
Urchfont CC.
Winterbourne Gunner CC.
Malmesbury CC.
Trowbridge CC.
Bradford on Avon CC.
Catering. It was decided
that the cost of catering at a full day home match would be £13 and at a half
day match £5. It was further decided
that adults would pay the full amount, but that the Club will subsidise
students and the unemployed. Therefore
at home matches, students and the unemployed will pay £8 for catering at an all
day game and £5 for a half day game. At away
matches, the same charges will apply. At matches at which no catering charge is
raised against the Queries, there will be a match fee of £5.
Pre-season Nets. It was agreed that DCH would investigate the
availability of other locations for nets, eg Devizes or Warminster. It was decided that there would only be 2
pre-season net sessions.
Match Managers.
The Committee acknowledged that Will Hopton would probably no longer be able to be
an MM, and that Jeremy Wilkins would not be able to manage the SOA match. The following were to be invited to become a
match manager:
Joe Dorgan.
Harry Farley.
Geoff Ramsey.
Sam Palmer.
Yorkshire Tour. A decision was taken not to change any of
the fixtures on the Yorkshire tour. The
Committee discussed the costs to players of participating in the tour and decided that in future the Club will
subsidise the costs of the evening meal to the tune of £10 per head.
Membership. BA described the current
membership as being healthy and reported which candidates had joined as full
members. Those who had yet to reply
would be hastened.
The pros and cons of a proposed membership
spreadsheet were discussed.
BA reported that James
Stevenson had moved back to Wiltshire but would not be
available for the 2012 season.
Projects.
Winterbourne Gunner CC. BA reported that he had invited the senior
members to make a donation, in view of the nostalgic connections with WGCC
where the Queries played their first match. Thus far £210 had been donated plus
a possible promise of two lawn mowers.
More cheques had been promised. After a discussion it was agreed that we
should approach WGCC to ask if they wanted a fixture.
Club Golf Day. Following advice from BT it was agreed that
any 2012 golf event should not be held at High Post GC where we had now played
for 3 years. North Wilts GC was
suggested and BA will pursue this.
Club Dinner. The Committee decided that falling numbers suggested that an annual dinner was
too frequent and that the event should be organised every other year. As there
had been a dinner in 2011, the next dinner will be staged in 2013 and following
the advice from JW, it was suggested that it should be staged in a town,
probably Devizes. The Bear Hotel was suggested.
Avon Valley CC. SC described this
project which involves building a new cricket ground on ground owned by the
Wookey family at Rushall, near Upavon.
MCC Foundation Hub. DCH described this new MCC project in which he is the leader of a pilot
organised in Wiltshire involving Dauntsey’s School, the Devizes and Lavington Schools and Potterne CC.
Next
AGM. The date of
the AGM would be announced when the dates of the pre-season nets are
firm.
Accounts. SC distributed copies of
the current state of the accounts, which were very healthy. There was some
discussion about the amount and value of the stock held by BA and he will
confirm the figures as soon as possible.
Club
Colours. It was
agreed that BA should purchase further stock of Club green polo shirts however
the suggestion of a Club Blazer was not supported.
The Stats for the 2011 season
We had
40 fixtures on the 2011 card, and we have played 33 of them. 8 were
cancelled by the opposition or by the weather but one - the Old
Wellingtonians CC match - was replaced by a match at Farley CC.
So 7 were cancelled.
Of the 33 matches played, we WON 18, Lost 9, Drew 6 (3 completed and 3 abandoned as a draw).
